Micky Overman: “The Precipice” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

**** (out of 5)

Micky Overman is living on the precipice of marriage and motherhood, but who isn’t in their 30s? It’s certainly a much different place and stage for her than she expected in her 20s.

The world is changing fast, not just in terms of civil rights for women, but also how progress marches on, the younger generations have higher expectations for society…and that’s not even getting to the robot problem. Although as Overman aptly queries: As a woman, how much worse off would she be if the robots took over? She has delivered a tightly-packed set, but she proves herself willing to pause to riff in the moment when necessary. She also provides more evidence not that the world is flat, per se, but how comedy has experienced such a global flattening during this digital boom. Everyone everywhere is getting better at the form of stand-up. Even the accents can flatten and soften, too. If you asked me where Overman was from, I would’ve never guessed just from listening to her. But I also didn’t care. Funny is funny. And when she does divulge her heritage, she also can wink at it with a pun.

Micky Overman: The Precipice runs through Aug. 27 at Monkey Barrel Hive 2
