Celya AB: “Second Rodeo” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

***1/2 (out of 5)

Celya AB charmed the pants off of Edinburgh last year in her debut (my review). So of course she returned straight away to run it back. Ergo, this could not be her first rodeo. She releases that “confidence and a great accent” can only get her so far, and that in reality, second rodeos aren’t supposed to be easy, either. And she can no longer rely on the identity she carried with her last summer, that of the English-hating Frenchwoman. So now what? Being forced to mature her act, she’s trying to connect the kid inside of her with the adult that she has become.

What results is an hour of the Celya AB you may have fallen in love with last year, now with more whimsy. It might not feel exactly the same as you remember, but she has a presence and joie de vivre that entices you to root for her.

Celya AB: Second Rodeo runs through Aug. 27 at Pleasance Courtyard Beside
