Mark Watson: “Search” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

****1/2 (out of 5)

Mark Watson keeps contributing to a never-ending Notes file of things he needs answers to. The byproduct of a curious mind.

When his children were younger, Watson could feel like a proud papa serving as the search engine, drumming up results for any and all of their questions. But his son, now 12, has a smartphone. Which means he can Google anything. Even if that simple act of typing stands as a double betrayal of dad, who used to be the spokesman for Bing. Remember Bing? Watson will remind us all, as it’s just another strand to pull on for his existential crisis. What is the point of Mark Watson now? Not even Google’s auto fill helps matters.

Watson knows that a decade ago, he may have been much more famous, appearing on panel shows all the time, and seemingly having it all as a married man. He may not have any of those things now, but he’s much happier. He has the Fringe, where for one month every year, going on three decades, he’s king of the comedy world. It’s good to be this king.
