The trade magazine usually waits to time this announcement for late July, celebrating their “10 Comics To Watch” at Montreal’s Just For Laughs, but Variety is out with the 2022 list now!
For anyone who hasn’t been keeping track, the Variety list is really more of who’s already hot, and who’s already got stuff in the show-business pipeline, so watching them in the given year isn’t going to come as a shock to anyone. More of an honor along the lines of stars in the making? Anyhow. At any rate. Here’s who Hollywood says is on the rise this year in comedy. Congrats!
- Rosebud Baker – Started the year as a new writer on Saturday Night Live. Featured in June on Netflix’s new series, “That’s My Time With David Letterman.” Featured on Episode #236 of my podcast, Last Things First, in December 2018.
- J.R. De Guzman
- Vanessa Gonzalez
- Jay Jurden – Staff writer on Apple TV+’s “The Problem With Jon Stewart.”
- Matteo Lane
- Claudia O’Doherty
- Atsuko Okatsuka – Featured on Episode #292 of my podcast, Last Things First, in March 2020.
- Blair Socci – Featured on Episode #377 of my podcast, Last Things First, in February 2022.
- Moses Storm – Released his debut HBO Max comedy special, Trash White, in January. My review of it in Decider.
- Sheng Wang – Filming his first Netflix special this summer, produced by Ali Wong.
And yes, they will be feted (should they choose to attend the fest) in Montreal at the end of July.
