Hannibal Buress explains his larger-than-life jumpsuit face while on tour this summer and fall

If you’ve been to this summer’s Oddball Fest comedy tour, then you’ve probably seen Hannibal Buress saunter onstage sporting a jumpsuit with his face emblazoned across his chest, even larger than his real-life face.

It’s even bolder than his previous move, releasing a single, “Gibberish Rap,” and bringing out a wild crew of supporting dancers.

And it’s so crazy funny that Amy Schumer followed suit, literally.

On Tuesday night’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, Buress wore his jumpsuit once more, but this time, with an explanation.

“It wasn’t even my idea!” Buress said. Rather, it came about while preparing for this summer’s Oddball Fest tour, talking with the costume designer on Adult Swim’s The Eric Andre Show, where Buress plays Andre’s sidekick on the surreal talk-show parody. Buress told the designer he wanted “something crazy” for his upcoming tours.

“And she said there’s this place where you could get your own face on a jumpsuit,” Buress recounted. “I said, of course I’ll do that!”

“But I didn’t even think of that as an idea! I was walking around without that knowledge,” he told Meyers. “It’s fun, man! It makes me when I’m onstage with my face on my own jumpsuit, it makes you work harder. Because there’s nothing worse than bombing with your own face on yourself. So you have to crush when you’re wearing this.”

Buress and Meyers also joked about a sketch Buress pitched for SNL while Meyers was head writer, called “Fedora Basketball.” The premise was simple enough: NBA players who had to keep fedoras on their heads at all times. And yet. Buress wrote it with five different sets in mind. And Meyers noted that SNL cast members weren’t exactly built to play hoops. So the sketch never aired. Nor it did even air last night as part of Late Night’s SNL “Second Chance Theater.”
