“I’m gay and insufferable. I’m aware!”
But what’s a bipolar nonbinary bisexual dressed as a nun attending a LARP wedding in rural Australia to do when they’ve forgotten their medication? On the bright side, Scout Boxall notes that without medication or proper WiFi, it really helps set the mood for role-playing how to cope in medieval times.
And it makes them curious about the difference in society’s reactions to you saying you’re hearing voices, God’s or otherwise. “One century’s saint is another century’s psycho,” Boxall says. As they struggle to fall asleep and just get through the night, Boxall remembers the last thing they accomplished without/before being medicated, whipping up a lengthy essay in Year 12. Was it worth it? Yes! Boxall received a full-ride uni scholarship for that manic effort.
At one point, we learn about Boxall’s harrowing relationship with Bitcoin, with the comedian imagining some devious ways to spend that money here at this Fringe.
Fortunately, Boxall did win the Pinder Prize at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for this show, which funded their way to Edinburgh. And whether sent by God or by Australia’s comedy industry, Boxall proves a worthy messenger of mirth and madness alike.
