On the one hand, Sophie Zucker might be both deft and daft by turning an extremely embarrassing hookup into a one-woman musical romcom?!
On the other hand, Zucker’s also selling herself short. She’s already much more than just an actress with one line in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She broke through in a big way as a scene-stealer in Apple TV+’s Dickinson, and earlier this year, became a staff writer on The Daily Show before the writers’ strike put that on hold this summer. So she’s a talent to watch, for sure. And she puts that on full display, as well revealing herself emotionally and physically, recounting her encounter with a second cousin at her grandfather’s shiva. Her musicality elevates the production, from imagined lyrics for the instrumental title theme of Succession, to her country music anthem of a mission statement, a twee song she describes as in the vein of Zooey Deschanel, Kate Nash and Feist, and a couple of other numbers suggesting a brighter off-Broadway future for Zucker, should she want it.
Sophie Sucks Face runs through Aug. 28 at Underbelly Bristo Square, Dexter
