Emily Walsh: “Dad Girl” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

*** 1/2 (out of 5)

“People forget that you can like boy’s stuff, and also boy’s stuff.” So it is that Emily Walsh has grown up from a tomboy into a Dad Girl who has a husband who’s nice and friendly. Her husband also has become baby crazy. Which presents a quandary for Walsh. She has an IUD, which means not having kids for eight years, but does she even want to become a mom?

Two cousins have listed them as guardians to their kids should something happen to them. Walsh’s own dad died when she was 11. She finds poignant symmetry years later, upon discovering she’s working in theater on a base in Hawaii where her father was recovering after his helicopter crashed over Laos during the Vietnam War. Yeah, that’s a lot to chew on. Then again, her father didn’t become a father until 37. She’s 37 now So who knows what her future holds?

This is an efficient hour of stand-up comedy. So, dad-like, even?

Emily Walsh: Dad Girl runs through Aug. 27 at Just The Tonic at The Grassmarket Centre
