Yuriko Kotani: “This Is My Work” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

** 1/2 (out of 5)

Yuriko Kotani, a Japanese comedian who’s spent almost two decades in the UK, has plenty of TV credits to her name, and even met the king, didn’t seem ready to bring this show to the Fringe. Kotani says if she delivered her routines in Japanese, she’d get straight to the jokes. Speaking English, though, we can understand what she saying, if not always knowing where she’s going with her points. The biggest pure laugh she received in the first half of the set came from a bit about comparing Mega Bus to Battle Royale. She tells us she just wants to be the funniest aunt to her nephew. At least for him, she’s speaking his language.

Yuriko Kotani: This Is My Work runs through Aug. 23 at Monkey Barrel, Hive 2
