Simon Brodkin: “Xavier” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

*** 1/2 (out of 5)

**** if you’re British

Sometimes I just have to slide the rating scale, knowing when something is for thee, but not so much for me?

Simon Brodkin is a prankster who comes off initially as a bit of a wanker, but that combination makes him hugely popular on TikTok, if not also for bigwigs such as former FIFA head Sepp Blatter or former Prime Minister Theresa May. For his live show at the Fringe, he starts off with a bit of lackluster crowd, but it turns out there’s a point to his meandering; that is, to make them remember they’re better than banker wankers. And also better than himself. He knows his wife and brother are better humans. But at least he’s not a cunt like…Liz Truss. Or Matt Hancock, whom he makes fun of for rehabbing his image on reality TV. Or Phillip Schofield. Or Harry and Meghan. There was a brilliant moment during Brodkin’s talk about Prince Andrew, and pedophile hunters, when two older men walked out of the show, right past Brodkin. Awkward! But the comedian handled the situation like the pro he is. So yes, this is a comedy show chock full of British politics and references. Which I can acknowledge, even if I don’t fully appreciate or want to appreciate.

Simon Brodkin: Xavier runs through Aug. 27 at Pleasance Courtyard Forth
