Ania Magliano: “I Can’t Believe You’ve Done This” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

***1/2 (out of 5)

The show description indicates Ania Magliano’s new hour delivers her response to a dreadful haircut. Magliano certainly does dish about what happened to her locks and why, but that’s not the real dirt. Audiences quickly snapped up tickets to see this 25-year-old return for her second Fringe run, and she treats them to some witty barbs about gossip, finding ways to make us look at the dark art of dirt-dishing as something perhaps more mainstream than we realize. What is a therapist, after all, but a professional gossip? Does it seem suspicious that the New Testament tales about Jesus are referred to as Gospels? Gospels…gossip. As for Magliano herself, she can tell her therapist and us as well about her boxing lessons, her explorations in potential threesomes, her thoughts on breast reduction surgery, her best friend who she may fancy almost as much if not more than he fancies her, and of course, that traumatic hair salon experience, sink gremlins and all. But if you blink and your ears miss it, Magliano also drops a whopper of a revelation amid all of that that explains why she’s gone and done all of the other things. You won’t get the gossip on that, though. Perhaps because she’s still processing it. Or perhaps because we as an audience aren’t entitled to know everything about her.

Ania Magliano: I Can’t Believe You’ve Done This runs through Aug. 27 at Pleasance Courtyard Baby Grand
