Morgan Jay: “Emotional Damage,” at Edinburgh Fringe 2022

***1/2 (out of 5)

Morgan Jay told the audience that I sat in with Sunday that he’d have to cut his Fringe run short by a week. Good news, though. He’d booked a new commitment back in the States. That’s where and how I first became aware of him in 2019, when he competed on NBC’s Bring The Funny.

That’s how Jay’s musical comedy flows. Interactive, but never too harsh. Mellow guitar music and singing about relationships. You’ll either identify, want to hook up, or want to break up. If it’s the latter? Jay quips: “If your relationship can’t stand an hour with me, it wasn’t meant to be.”

Jay has more than 600,000 followers on TikTok right now. One of his most impactful tunes might just be one about his and our relationship to social media. While his song is called “Losing Followers,” it’s not likely that’ll happen too much for him in real life the way he keeps playing.

Morgan Jay – Emotional Damage runs through Aug. 22, 2022, at Underbelly Bristo Square (Daisy).
