Mean Girls, Amy Schumer and John Leguizamo are among the comedic stars getting feted this year by the Tony Awards for their work on Broadway.
Mean Girls, the musical adaptation of Tina Fey’s 2004 movie, is up for 12 Tonys, including Best Musical. Fey (who wrote the book) and her husband, Jeff Richmond (who wrote the music), said: “We are honestly too excited and too proud of our ensemble to make a joke about this. We are are so grateful to be embraced by the Broadway community in this way and that we get to work together twenty-five hours a day with the same amount of excitement as our young cast. This is new for all of us.”
Schumer is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her work in Meteor Shower. She’s the only nominee from that Steve Martin play.
And Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons, is up for Best Play. Leguizamo will go home a winner regardless, as the Tony Awards are giving him a special award recognizing his work and career this year.
The 72nd annual Tony Awards will take place June 10, 2018, at Radio City Music Hall. Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban will co-host.
