Dana Carvey returns to SNL for a special Church Lady cold open to remind you to watch USA’s First Impressions on Tuesday

Brie Larson hosted Saturday Night Live for the Mother’s Day weekend episode, but SNL star Dana Carvey returned in a bit of a surprise to open the show this weekend with his holy mother of a favorite sketch from the 1980s, The Church Lady’s “Church Chat” talk show.

Well, isn’t that special?

Of course, fans loved seeing Church Lady take down Ted Cruz in the wake of his presidential campaign’s failure — especially since the former House Speaker called him “Lucifer in the flesh” — and having Trump there, too, allowed Church Lady to cover the week’s political headlines, deliver her trademark catchphrase, as well as some zingers in about Beyonce and Jay-Z.

But really, this cold open is mostly here to make sure you tune in Tuesday night to the premiere of First Impressions with Dana Carvey, the new comedy competition on the USA Network (a sister station in the NBCUniversal universe). Nice to see Lorne Michaels pitch in to help out one of his great former finds make good comedy once more on the TV.

Here’s the cast of First Impressions, if you want to get to know the contestants before Tuesday night’s debut on USA.
