The next stand-up comedian to hit the big-screen big time is Gabriel Iglesias.
Open Road Films announced today it will distribute Gulfstream Pictures’ The Fluffy Movie — a stand-up comedy concert film starring Iglesias — in cinemas nationwide on July 11, 2014.
Iglesias exclaimed on Twitter @fluffyguy: “ITS OFFICIAL, “THE FLUFFY MOVIE” COMES OUT JULY 11TH 🙂”
He’ll film his upcoming shows Feb. 28 and March 1 at the SAP Center in San Jose, the arena where the NHL’s Sharks play.
This follows what already had been a busy previous year for “Fluffy.” Iglesias most recently provided a voice in the animated film, The Nut Job, and had a supporting role in Magic Mike. His third one-hour DVD/special for Comedy Central, “Aloha Fluffy,” debuted in April 2013.
Levity Entertainment also is producing The Fluffy Movie, along with Iglesias’ Fluffy Inc., as well as Gulfstream and Arsonhouse Entertainment. For a money quote, here’s Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg: “Gabriel has worked incredibly hard to become a massive success in the world of stand-up comedy. With his roles in Magic Mike and The Nut Job and a hilarious performance in our upcoming film A Haunted House 2, he is a rising star on the big screen and this new film is certain to be a hit with comedy lovers everywhere.”
