Maya Rudolph’s Prince cover band, live in concert

Music fans excited to see the reunion of power-pop band That Dog last weekend in Los Angeles received a bonus treat at the Troubadour, as Maya Rudolph revealed she fronts a Prince cover band called Princess!

Now we know that if Fred Armisen had ever faltered in his Saturday Night Live sketches as Prince, that Rudolph could have hopped into the role (instead, she played his sidekick, Beyonce Knowles). You can see a lot more Maya this fall, as she returns to NBC to co-star in the new sitcom Up All Night.

Here is fan footage of Maya Rudolph and Princess performing two Prince classics, “Darling Nikki” and “Controversy.” Roll it!

This ditty contains some NSFW lyrics, although NSFW didn’t exist as a slang acronym back in the 1980s.

And to refresh your SNL memories, here is Rudolph as Beyonce belting out songs alongside Armisen as Prince from the Season 30 “Prince Christmas Special” sketch.
