Amelia Hamilton unintentionally may get a bad rap for being known as a rapper. Hamilton serves up rhymes to beats, certainly, but looking around at the audience, it’s difficult to get past the notion that more than a few seem confused to find themselves at a comedy show that just so happens to include musical numbers, and not a full-on comedy concert.
I write none of this to disparage Hamilton, mind you. She was a deserving winner of last year’s ISH award for Best Newcomer. In her follow-up this year, she’s here in a varying football top paired with a short skirt and a long banter. As she called it on the night I attended, a “Ye olde Wild West Ham United” look.
Her brand of cowgirl feminism aims to take her exes clothes, learning to love the Jennies who have trained all of them before her, and teaching us a thing or two about how we treat each other.
While she may claim to hate poetry, there is more than a bit of poetic justice to both her comedy and her rap. Now if only she could find romantic justice for not only herself, but the rest of us as well.
