Lorna Rose Treen: “24 Hour Diner People” at Edinburgh Fringe 2025

⭐⭐⭐⭐½

Lorna Rose Treen was one of my favorite newcomers at the 2023 Fringe, and she has made a triumphant return with her sophomore show, upping the ante, the antics, and the anticipatory delight for what might come next.

But first, we’re treated to a showcase shining a light on Treen’s peculiar takes on the various characters who come and go at a diner that could be anywhere America, although you get the sense this all is taking place in a surreal road stop in the middle of nowhere, the only refuge for food, drink and a bathroom break for hundreds of miles in any direction. At the center of the action is Treen, anchoring it all as the waitress who has seen it all, before quick-changing back and forth and around again to feature her customers, a ragtag group of regular irregulars that include a trucker with ridiculously long arms, a nervous girl awaiting prom, a dastardly duo looking to rob the joint, and more. It’s silliness heightened to outer space. She may employ more crowd work than before. She may have a dummy stand in for her when need be. She may even eat her tips.

But she has not killed comedy. And this show has not killed theatre.

Long Live Lorna!

Lorna Rose Treen “24 Hour Diner People” plays Pleasance Courtyard through Aug. 24, 2025.
