Katie Green: “¡Ay Mija!” at Edinburgh Fringe 2024

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Katie Green grew up in Southern California with a Salvadoran grandmother and a British grandfather.

Which can make for great comedy. But also for tragically horrifying reviews of her grandfather’s fish-and-chips chop in California. The crux of Green’s debut hour at the Fringe is how she missed out on the Latina rite of passage, the quinceañera, and how she wanted to make up for it and then some when she turned 30, even if she happened to have migrated to the UK by then.

Turns out she might not have had the 15th birthday celebration she hoped for, anyhow, as she reveals when she turns back the clock to re-examine her high-school years, and how she felt isolated and leaned into that reputation. Green certainly has blossomed since then as a comedian, and if her dating history might give anyone pause (whether it be the professional basketball player, the jealous comedian, or the freestyle would-be grime rapper), she has proved she could not only survive it all, but thrive in her new surroundings.

It’s only a shame there wasn’t time nor space to actually throw her doble quinceañera right then and there. Perhaps if Green takes this show on tour afterward, she can throw herself a right party on the regular.
