Colin Hoult: “Colin” at Edinburgh Fringe 2024

⭐⭐⭐½

Colin Hoult has received acclaim and Edinburgh prestige as a Best Show nominee in 2022 for his portrayal of eccentric actress Anna Mann, but who is Colin Hoult, exactly?

“He’s not right,” his family might say.

This hour represents his fan’s chance to get to know the real Colin, as he rediscovers himself along the way, from Nottingham in the 1980s, which he refers to as the darkness “before the Firth and the Farrell” made Colins someone to look up to in pop culture. Hoult had his dad, big Colin, instead. Little Colin felt his dad might’ve been the only normal one in the Hoult clan. As for the comedian, he deals with ADHD (acknowledging how commonplace a diagnosis it has become for comedians, he also welcome audience members to identify themselves, also), and recounts his early forays into contemporary dance, how he married into a posh family, and how he’s uncertain how to be a good dad to his own two kids.

At least he doesn’t have that dark tower of an asylum looming over his bedroom window any longer.
