Catherine Bohart: “Again, With Feelings” at Melbourne 2024

**** (out of 5)

I didn’t see this in my program, but Catherine Bohart informed us up top that her show was billed as “a relaxed performance,” which apparently meant audience members could come and go as they pleased?! She’s certainly not relaxed. And she warns us she can see and hear us if we take the relaxed idea too literally. And then she proves just how nimble and eagle-eyed she is, noting and incorporating weird moments from the room into her hour, ever the consummate pro who knows how to make what otherwise might be a standard act and tailor it especially for that night’s audience.

As for her act itself, Bohart finds herself in an age-gap relationship (she’s 35, her partner is 29) where the gap is just wide enough to complicate communications and standards (even more so due to their ages than their nationalities; Bohart is Irish, her partner English). So she’s wondering how to make that work, while also wondering if she’s ready to settle down and have kids, and how would that work for a lesbian couple where neither one is itching to be the chid-bearer? Bohart’s mom is more than ready for these developments. And that’s not making Bohart any more relaxed, either.

Catherine Bohart presents “Again, With Feelings” through 21 April at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
