Viggo Venn: “British Comedian” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

*** 1/2 (out of 5)

At one point during a routine in which he gets prompts for an obscure series of impersonations, Viggo Venn asks aloud:: “Seriously, how did I win that thing?”

That thing was Britain’s Got Talent earlier this year, where the Norwegian clown took home the top prize. It’s undoubtedly resulted in more people packing his shows now, even if those new fans aren’t entirely certain what it is Venn does when he’s not tearing off hi-vis vests to the sounds of “One More Time.” Some things he does include joking about how his dreams of becoming a British comedian felt weirder post-Brexit, and how he sometimes struggles to understand British humor, despite going to great lengths to figure it out onstage. In the basement of Monkey Barrel 4, there’s sometimes not even enough room for Viggo Venn to show off his schtick. I imagine in the extra shows he’s added in a proper theater, the visuals come across that much clearer.

Viggo Venn: British Comedian runs through Aug. 27 at Monkey Barrel 4 with extra shows at Pleasance One
