Spencer Jones: “Making Friends” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

*** 1/2 (out of 5)

“News flash: comedian has mental health problems. That’s a hot take!”

But Spencer Jones is properly loopy, with the loop pedal to demonstrate his penchant for singing along with masks, cardboard cutouts and plenty of props. The two-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee has returned to the Fringe with a new hour and a new attitude. Partially because after moving to London at 19 and spending a quarter-century there, he’s married with kids and they’ve packed up for Dover. Which means he was faced with the prospect of needing to make new friends as a grown-up. Albeit a childish, mental one. Jones worried early in the pandemic that everyone would start dong his act. No need to worry. Nobody incubates their ideas like he does.

Spencer Jones: Making Friends runs through Aug. 27 at Monkey Barrel 3
