Bilal Zafar: “Imposter” at Edinburgh Fringe 2023

***1/2 (out of 5)

A former Best Newcomer nominee, Bilal Zafar returns to the Fringe this year as a newlywed with a different domestic relationship on his mind, a more unexpected one as a new housemate in the months leading up to his wedding (to a white woman!) is full of tall tales. Jack is drunk, disorderly, maybe Dutch, and most probably dangerous. But is he more dangerous to Bilal and his other housemates, or just to himself? Jack’s lies start big and unravel, and no amount of visits by the police seem to provide any answers. Of course, this wouldn’t be a Fringe show without some big plot twists and revelations.

Although I wouldn’t want to hype it up too much, lest I be the imposter. Because whilst Zafar has quite the audience on Twitch portraying an unhinged football manager, his onstage presence remains quite hinged. He’s low energy in his stage presence as well as in the decisions he makes when confronted by Jack, the police, or his fiancee. Swear to God.

Bilal Zafar: Imposter runs through Aug. 28 at Underbelly Bristo Square Friesian
