Comedian who played president on TV elected actual president of Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky played the Ukrainian president on TV from 2015 to 2019, and now he’s just been elected the actual president.

Zelensky won last week’s national election with 73.2 percent of the vote, defeating the incumbent Petro Poroshenko. He won on the Servant of the People party ticket, created in 2018 by employees of the company that produced his TV series, also titled Servant of the People.

Zelensky is 41 and had no prior political experience, which means his unexpected elevation to his country’s commander in chief neatly parallels that of his TV series. He’ll take office in June. Of course, real life in Ukraine isn’t so funny, with Russia invading and taking over Ukraine’s Crimea territory in 2014. During his campaign, Zelensky suggested Ukraine join the EU and NATO.
