A Black Lady Sketch Show will premiere on HBO in 2019.
Robin Thede, last seen hosting a weekly talk show for BET, and before that writing and performing for Larry Wilmore’s nightly talk show on Comedy Central, will star in the sketch comedy series. Issa Rae, star/creator of Insecure, brought the project to HBO and will EP.
The series features an all black female writers room, with celebrity guests joining Thede and other comedians in the sketches.
Lauren Ashley Smith, previously head writer on BET’s The Rundown with Robin Thede, will serve as head writer here, too.
Other executive producers include Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry for 3 Arts Entertainment along with Tony Hernandez and Brooke Posch of JAX Media.
Tweeted Thede: “I created “A Black Lady Sketch Show” because I love how many insanely funny black women are grinding in these comedy streets! It’s time the WORLD recognizes. This show is going to be epic and @IssaRae & I are so honored to be bringing this project to @HBO!”
