Summer reads for your ears, from Audible

Audible, Amazon’s audio arm, has ramped up its original comedy programming to go along with an already-robust array of audiobooks narrated by comedians this summer. To wit: In mid-July, Audible released both a podcast series from Bob Newhart as well as an exclusive audiobook-only memoir from David Spade. Since then, we’ve seen… A memoir and an exclusive live performance from Saturday Night Live star Darrell Hammond: God, If You’re Not up There, I’m F*cked and That’s Clinton! None of Our Business, is a new Audible production based on stories of eavesdropping, hosted by comedians Gwynne Phillips and Briana Templeton, who often perform...

Review: Demetri Martin, “The Overthinker” (Netflix)

Demetri Martin went all in on the theme for his Netflix special, The Overthinker. Even in the trailer, which doesn’t show you much of anything from the new hour. Which isn’t all necessarily new. You may recognize a bit or two from his old Comedy Central series, or from his more recent directorial big-screen debut, Dean. So her social observations on women her age take on even deeper meaning, if not also more urgency. As I wrote in my review for Decider: Iliza also reveals how women put in almost all of the effort in their attempt...

Review: Jim Jefferies, “This Is Me Now” (Netflix)

I’m a fan of Jim Jefferies and a bigger fan of his weekly Comedy Central series. Which makes his 2018 Netflix special that much more disappointing. This Is Me Now feels like a cash grab, and filming it in Britain makes feel even more so, as the setting allows him to talk about all of the American political mayhem of the past two years to an audience that hasn’t grown as tired of it as we have. The stuff not about politics updates us on just how viral his bit on guns has made him. As I wrote in...
