David Krumholtz will become an elderly widow for laughs later this year, as IFC announced today it has ordered eight half-hour episodes of his sitcom, Gigi’s Bucket List.
The series stars Krumholtz as Gertrude Rotblum (“Gigi”), a 76-year-old woman who discovers a previously unknown bank account in her husband’s will after he dies. With millions to spend and not a lot of time to spend it, Gigi starts crossing off her proverbial bucket list. Ricky Mabe will play Gigi’s male nurse sidekick.
“This character has been living inside me since birth. Friends have often accused me of acting like a grandma,” said Krumholtz. “It’s an absolute privilege to be bringing Gigi to life for IFC, known for their irreverent brand of comedy and willingness to explore depth of character.”
He becomes Gigi through the makeup effects of Tony Gardner and Alterian Inc., who previously helped transform Johnny Knoxville into “Bad Grandpa.”
“David has done an incredible job of inhabiting this relatable bubbe character,” said Jennifer Caserta, IFC’s president. “I hope to emulate Gigi’s unfiltered honesty and wreckless ambition when conquering my own bucket list some day.”
Gigi’s Bucket List is executive produced by Krumholtz and Tim Gibbons (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Real Husbands of Hollywood, Off Their Rockers), along with Grandma’s House Entertainment’s Ben Newmark and Dan Newmark, Ricky Mabe and Zach Golden. Adam Bold and Mike Lopez also of Grandma’s House Entertainment will serve as producers.
Production begins in June in Los Angeles, with a premiere date later in 2015.
