The unofficial but definitely happening Mr. Show reunion in 2015

Have you been clamoring, wishing and hoping for an onscreen reunion of Mr. Show, the critical cult favorite sketch comedy series that ran on HBO from 1995-1998, starred David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, and catapulted the careers of several other heroes of your alt-comedy universe?

Consider your wish already granted for 2015!

Cross and Odenkirk previously did reunite for live tours over the past several years, and in 2013 published a book (Hollywood Said No!: Orphaned Film Scripts, Bastard Scenes, And Abandoned Darlings From The Creators Of Mr. Show).

In November, Odenkirk told Splitsider that he was hoping to see a 20th anniversary Mr. Show special on HBO in 2015: “We’re talking about it. I’d like to see that happen. I’d like to do more work with David Cross because we work great together… Paul F. Tompkins, more of him. More Jay Johnston if somebody can figure out what to do with him. Who else?”

Then the year kicked off with this actual reunion of those four fellows plus four more, as Paul F. Tompkins posted the above photo to Instagram. His caption: “Eight men out… of the 1990s. Maybe something new coming from the Mr. Show gang in the new year? #mrshow”

And now this week, David Cross launched a Kickstarter to cover distribution costs on his new movie (and directorial debut), HITS. One of the donation rewards/prizes is an appearance in the Mr. Show reunion, apparently filming this spring if Cross has anything to say about it, which he did:

If you pledge $500 for his HITS Kickstarter, which someone already has, then that person will receive “DAVID CROSS’ BEARD – That’s right. When I have to shave my beard for Mr. Show I will collect it and send it to you in a lovely wooden box perhaps with velvet lining. This is the same kind of box Bruce Wayne (America’s, “Batman”) would receive a beard in! Use the beard hairs for whatever you may. Please note – in several Southeast Asian countries my beard holds magical powers.”

If you pledge $5,000 or more, which someone also already has, then that person will appear in the Mr. Show reunion! Really? Cross writes, “BE IN MR. SHOW – We’ll be shooting sometime in March/April in Los Angeles and we’ll feature you as a background player. Then, come to the taping and stick around for a meet and greet. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get some “face time”???”

So there you have it.

The prophecy foretold by Tompkins has now been told. Mr. Show, reuniting in Los Angeles this spring, and coming to a screen near you…

…I guess we still have some questions and mysteries left in the world in 2015, and that’s not a bad thing.
