John C. Reilly returns for season 3 of “Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule” on Adult Swim

Of all the awesome and great things about Adult Swim’s late-night spoofery Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! (2007-2010), perhaps the sketches that inspired the most awe came when Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim ceded the spotlight to Dr. Steve Brule, the oafish expert of nothing, curious about everything who had his own public-access show/segment on “Ch5 News” called “Check It Out!”

Brule, as played by John C. Reilly, earned his own starring spin-off series with “Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule” which returns for a third, six-episode season tonight.

It’s all improvised. So bless the hearts of the people in this pair of clips from the third-season premiere, “Planes.” Roll it.

Reilly, nominated for both Academy Awards and Golden Globes, told Esquire back in a 2010 interview about dumbing it down for Brule: “I just showed up with my costume and started channeling that guy. I don’t know where he came from. I find the less I say about Steve Brule the better. I think of him as real, and anytime I start to analyze him, it just gets really boring.”

In his first season which aired during 2010, Brule explored “Food,” “Relationships,” “Family,” “Health, “Fear” and “Friendship.” In 2012, he returned to take on “Boats,” “Pleasure,” “Money,” “Space,” “Animals,” “Life” (and “Death”). You can watch full episodes from the first two seasons of Check It Out! online via Adult Swim.

After tonight’s debut with “Planes,” look forward to seeing Dr. Brule attend “Church” and ride on “Skateboards.” We can only hope and pray the latter episode also includes surfboarts!
