There’s a worthwhile hour in there somewhere, but for now, at least, Adrion is offering competing themes and tones for us, opening ominously by revealing that “Hitler is my safe space.” He is German, after all. But a German who unintentionally became a male model, then very intentionally became a YouTuber and a stand-up comedian in Los Angeles.
Drastic tonal shifts are commonplace at the Fringe. Sure. So finding out that Adrion has a traumatic story to tell shouldn’t be that surprising. And his life experience gives him a unique opportunity to both relate to women and #MeToo and how toxic masculinity expresses itself across all aspects of society. But his stand-up itself exudes much of the toxic L.A. comedy club bro mindset, his YouTube videos falling into the cliche traps of provocation, that only serve to make the comedy portion of his hour feel smaller. Adrion is a tall, good-looking guy doing stand-up comedy, but he’s also a trauma survivor. And a grandchild of Germans who had to grapple with life decisions in terms of whether they’d participate in global trauma. There’s a lot to work with here. This hour, as performed in the first week of Fringe, still wants to have it both ways. If he’s going to continue to be a comedy club bro with a heavy backstory, he’s going to need to find a better way to balance the act.
