Are you ready? Are you steady? Because Irish comedian David O’Doherty is about to perform perhaps his greatest trick yet, a quite personal show that’s heartfelt whether or not you get to his parents witness it for themselves. This is an hour in which O’Doherty reflects on growing up the son of a jazz musician and an athlete, and somehow not quite meeting them in the middle, even if he does still have a way with a keyboard. The pandemic brought them back together, and spending that time allowed the son to reconnect with his parents and gain a newfound appreciation for what they’ve done for themselves and for him. Even if none of his songs become as famous in his home country as his dad’s tune for kids, and even if none of his jokes will elicit quite the reaction of a drunken women tumbling down the steps. He’s quite OK with that. After all, he’s still touring the world as a musical comedian. “How is this a thing?!” he bellows. It’s a thing. And it’s a joy to behold.
