Captivating, curious, adventurous. Marjolein Robertson may come off as a bit of a hot mess. And not just because she’s from Shetland.
But that doesn’t mean Robertson deserves the relationships she has endured. She cleverly entertains us with tales about her real-life misadventures told in reverse chronological order, a la Memento. And she revisits her previous Fringe show, titled “Thank God Fish Don’t Have Hands” with a joke to reboot the premise, this time spinning it as a fish-out-of-water love story. With a catch. So to speak. From the astral plane to the Celtic/Nordic folktales about selkies, Robertson has even those of us who don’t understand the Shetland accent at rapt attention, hanging on every word. Especially when we learn why last year’s show might not have made any sense. Robertson couldn’t write the show she wanted to tell then. Thank God she had the hands and the heart to write it and tell it now.
