Lights out for Comedy Central’s Lights Out with David Spade

Bummer.

Variety broke the news Friday night that Comedy Central isn’t going to be airing any new episodes of Lights Out with David Spade on Comedy Central.

Head writer Sean O’Connor shouted out his writing staff tonight: Connor McSpadden, Keith Carey, Candice Thompson, Bobby Miyamoto, Sarah Tiana, Cullen Crawford, John Hume, Jocelyn Richard, and Lance Crouther.

I’d delivered some high praise to Lights Out, which premiered last summer in the post Daily Show slot, as a worthy next-generation version of Tough Crowd.

Comedy Central is still making new episodes of The Daily Show with everyone contributing remotely, as most other networks are doing for their late-night shows.

Looks like Lights Out will still produce monologues and interviews or other segments for social media this month, at least, while Comedy Central sees if anyone else is interested in airing them on the TV?

From Variety:

A production shutdown prompted by the coronavirus pandemic effectively ended the possibility of growing the audience for the show, which Comedy Central remains enthusiastic about creatively. Spade has, since then, been producing a digital version of the show from home, which Comedy Central will continue to mount on its non-linear platforms for the next few weeks. As evidence of the regard that the company holds for Spade and the strength of its relationship with him, it will partner with the comic and his team to pursue an outside buyer for “Lights Out” at a time when a rapidly growing number of platforms are looking for programming.
