Saturday Night Live gives Oscar The Grouch the 2019 “Joker” movie treatment

Did we need a dark take on Sesame Street‘s Oscar the Grouch? Well, no.

But this week’s Saturday Night Live delivered a fresh take on the popular new Joker movie by spinning it out as a real-life down-and-out version of the longtime children’s television program and an origin story for the show’s down-and-out character who lives in a trash can.

With Kenan Thompson as a pimp named Snuff; Alex Moffat and Mikey Day as Bert and Ernie, caught between a mugger and a hard alley; Melissa Villasenor as Elmo, handcuffed by the coppers; Heidi Gardner as Big Bird, exotic dancer; Beck Bennett as The Count; The Cookie Monster; and guest host David Harbour as The Grouch. Roll it!

From cast member Mikey Day, after the show: “Losing my voice the day of the show sucks ass. But writing this Oscar the GROUCH & Joker mashup trailer with @streetseidell based on an idea by @DavidKHarbour and having @paulbriganti direct it, was good times.”
