Montreal’s Just For Laughs festival has booked Louie Anderson to deliver its keynote address for the 2019 comedy confab next month. Anderson’s address, “Never Give Up,” will touch on his 40 years of ups and downs in show business. His career has made a big splash of a comeback since diving in the ABC celebrity competition series, Splash, in 2013, going on to deliver an Emmy-winning performance as Christine Baskets on FX’s Baskets. Freestyle Love Supreme sets Broadway run for Fall 2019

The hip-hop improv comedy group now known famously for featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda as its frontman used to play for audiences at Ars Nova more than a decade ago. They moved on to dates at Comix and Joe’s Pub, performed at Super Bowl Week for ESPN, and a TV series on the old Pivot cable channel. Then Hamilton happened. Full Frontal with Samantha Bee isn’t the only late-night show fronted by a woman that’s eligible for an Emmy in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category. But Bee is the only woman left standing. Literally. While E!’s Busy Tonight and BET’s Raq Rants aren’t airing new episodes anytime soon, Bee’s show continues weekly on TBS. But as she demonstrates in this first of several For Your Consideration videos for Emmy voters, Bee will sit at a desk if it makes you feel more comfortable about nominating...

Saskia Schuster, the head of comedy programming for Britain’s ITV network, told a festival audience Monday that: “I won’t commission anything with an all-male writing team.” In fact, Schuster already has led efforts to increase the female workforce in TV writers room with an initiative called Comedy 50:50. As she explains on that site, “The seeds of Comedy 50:50 started in February 2018 when I attended ERA 50:50 at...

Review: Adam Devine, “Best Time of Our Lives” on Netflix

About 20 minutes into his first hourlong stand-up comedy special, Adam Devine jokes about his love for capes, and imagines wearing one for this taping but never mentioning it. Spoiler alert: He not only mentions the cape some more, but also sports it at the very end. Ta-Dah! What’s weirder to me, though, is that for his Netflix stand-up debut, Best Time of Our Lives, Devine goes back to his hometown of Omaha, and talks extensively about his childhood, yet never mentions that he’s from Omaha. Ta-dah?! Read my full review of Devine’s special on...
