FX greenlights series order for “Baskets” starring Zach Galifianakis

Zach Galifianakis has his first starring TV vehicle! FX just ordered Baskets, a half-hour, single-camera sitcom starring Galifianakis, and co-created by Galifianakis, Louis C.K. and Jonathan Krisel. You’ll have to wait until 2016 to see it, though. FX’s announcement today said the first 10 episodes will go into production in 2015, with a launch date the following year. Baskets follows Chip Baskets (Galifianakis), a guy who just wants to become a respected professional clown in Bakersfield, Calif. How to submit a half-hour special to Comedy Central, based on the successful experience of Adam Newman

This is republished with permission by the author, Adam Newman. To any stand-ups submitting for a Comedy Central Half Hour this year (or any future years), I thought this might be helpful. This is the time of year when comedians are starting to put together submission tapes (it’s a submission process, btw), and I’ve had a bunch of comedian buds asking for everything from general tips to weirdly specific technical questions. When I first decided to submit, I scoured the Internet looking for examples of comedians’ submission videos (with no luck), so I figured the most helpful thing I...

We’re ever so much closer to crowning a new winner on America’s Got Talent as this ninth season launched into semifinal action last night. NBC threw a big ol’ BBQ party inside 30 Rock to celebrate, inviting the remaining contestants, judges and select media to dig in, hoe down and celebrate. So it was that The Comic’s Comic enjoyed the opportunity to grill judge Howie Mandel, check up on stand-up comedian Dan Naturman as he prepared to perform, and watched the first semifinal group along with stand-up comedian Wendy Liebman, who’ll be performing in next week’s other semifinal. After...

Poor Comedians In A Car Getting Coffee debuts with guest Kevin Hines

For everyone who argues that Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee exists only for and by the rich and famous, there finally is an alternative from the alternative comedy community. Meet “Poor Comedians In A Car Getting Coffee.” It’s a parody, yes, but also very real, as UCB performers Kristen Bartlett and Jason Gore interview comedians who are just starting out in New York City. Not that that’s true of their first guest, however. Kevin Hines is not only a UCB performer and improviser (The Curfew, The Brothers Hines) but also a teacher. “Poor Comedians In A Car...

The finale of Chelsea Handler’s “Chelsea Lately” on E!

If there were any doubt about Chelsea Handler’s standing in show business or in late-night TV, then her live one-hour finale episode of Chelsea Lately on E! should put that to rest, too. Dozens of stand-up comedians who have benefitted from her nightly panels came back to pay homage to her in stereotyped groups, not even given the chance to speak again, but just happy for one more TV credit with her. Miley Cyrus sang “It’s Over.” 50 Cent, an ex-boyfriend of Handler’s, also performed a song. Ellen DeGeneres showed up in the showers with a naked Handler in...
