Earwolf expands podcasting network with music, lifestyle and more comedy programming

Earwolf, the podcasting network founded by Scott Aukerman (Comedy Bang! Bang!) and Jeff Ullrich, is adding music and lifestyle programming to its lineup of talk shows, while also expanding its list of comedy offerings.

To wit: New comedy shows up-and-running within this month include “Nerd Poker: Dungeons and Dragons with Brian Posehn,” “The Fogelnest Files” with Jake Fogelnest” and “Love, Dad,” co-hosted by David Koechner and Ullrich.

Posehn’s show is a “mini-series” set to debut later in September on Earwolf and iTunes. It follows a weekly D&D game hosted by Posehn, playing with friends such as Gerry Duggan (co-writer of Marvel’s Deadpool), Blaine Capatch (Comedy Central’s Beat the Geeks), Ken Daly (The Usual Suspects), Sarah Guzzardo (AvoidThisJob.com), and Dungeon Master Scot Robison.

“We’ve been talking about doing this for a long time, but we finally banked enough episodes to start putting them out. And this now gives Brian the perfect excuse to get out of the house, away from his wife and baby,” Aukerman said. “For nerds, this will be the greatest thing they’ll hear since Robert Inglis performed the audio book of The Lord of the Rings. Required listening.”

“The Fogelnest Files” and “Love, Dad,” meanwhile, both debuted in August.

Fogelnest records his podcasts live at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre (East) in New York City, showcasing ridiculous archival footage to his guests and prompting conversations about them. “Jake is one of those guys who, before YouTube, had every underground tape of weird shit you had ever heard about,” Aukerman said. The premiere episode featured Julie Klausner and Chris Gethard. Future guests include Paul F. Tompkins and Jon Daly.

“Love, Dad” finds the actor, Koechner, and the Earwolf CEO, Ullrich, providing their differing perspectives on fatherhood. “When it comes to being a dad, David Koechner is like a grizzled cop who’s been on the force for years,” says Aukerman. “And Jeff is like a rookie with a hair trigger who doesn’t know anything. When you put them together, you get the Lethal Weapon of fatherhood-related podcasting.” Their series airs weekly on Thursdays.

Upcoming shows in music and lifestyle for the Earwolf network will include:

  • Shortwave with Grant-Lee Phillips
  • Nocturnal Emotions with Har Mar Superstar
  • Shots Fired
  • Yo, Is This Racist?

“While we will never turn our backs on comedy—this I swear—we at Earwolf felt it was time to branch out and try some new styles of programming,” said Aukerman, Earwolf’s chief creative officer. “Getting into music is a natural extension for us. I have bands on my show all the time, and we all know that musicians and comedians are two groups who hang out and enjoy each other’s company.”
