Ed Asner to be honored at third annual Great American Comedy Festival in Nebraska

Johnny Carson's hometown of Norfolk, Neb., is playing host this weekend to the third annual Great American Comedy Festival, where Ed Asner will be honored on Saturday with a "Comedy Legend" award. The fest is put together by comedian Eddie Brill, the comedy booker and warm-up act for Late Show with David Letterman. As in the first two years, the festival also includes family-friendly shows, late-night shows and a contest for 20 up-and-coming stand-up acts. Larry Miller will host and headline the finals on Saturday. Tell Your Friends, the movie! Liam McEneaney aims to show how comedy rose up from NYC’s basements

When I first heard that Liam McEneaney planned to make a concert film of "Tell Your Friends," I wondered how you could get a production crew and an audience together in the basement of Lolita to even do such a thing. Of course, my imagination is not always our reality, and in reality, McEneaney is making a movie that's about much more than just his long-running Monday night show in the Lower East Side. As he told me the other night, he aims to show how the basement-style alt-comedians of New York City and elsewhere have risen up to become mainstream stars that people across the country know and love. As he is telling his friends: "This movie will be based on a true story – that of a plucky little show that started in a bar basement and, like the Tree That Grows In Brooklyn, sprouted through the concrete cracks of the NYC alt.comedy scene, into a mighty oak that's seen some of the country's best comedians, writers, and musicians perform with us." Best Night Ever Show? Steve Martin to host two shows at Just For Laughs Montreal

When is a gala more than a Gala? How about when it's Steve Martin making his Just For Laughs Montreal debut? That's happening this July, as the festival has tapped Martin to host what it's dubbing as its first Best Night Ever Show. Martin will host two shows on Saturday, July 17, at the St. Denis Theatre, with a selection of top comedians plus an appearance by bluegrass band The Steep Canyon Rangers (who currently are on tour with Martin).
