“Sleepwalk With Me” sets Off-Broadway run

Mike Birbiglia’s new one-man show, Sleepwalk With Me, has found a venue and a start date for its Off-Broadway run. Previews begin Oct. 17 at the Bleecker Street Theatre. Nathan Lane is helping out, at least in name. For more info, go to the show’s site and sign up for updates. Or just check back here. In the meantime, Birbigs continues his regularly scheduled stand-up tour dates this month and into September. I hope he actually wears an outfit like this during his...

Whitney Cummings wins Last Comic Driving

If you missed last night’s finale of Last Comic Standing, then you also missed the melodramatic conclusion of the ancillary Last Comic Driving contest, which forced 10 other stand-up comedians to tell jokes to paid actors while sitting cramped in a hot car without air conditioning, as nice Brit Lady Cotton Fearne read her lines over and over again. And comics had to tell jokes over and over again. But we did have a winner…Whitney Cummings! Cummings wins $10,000. A lucky viewer also would win a Honda Pilot....

Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter tape pilot for Comedy Central

Longtime friends and comedy colleagues Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter will tape their TV pilot in New York City tonight for Comedy Central, called Michael and Michael Have Issues. Free tickets already offered and distributed (sorry for my delay in possibly aiding and abetting your live audience needs). It’s not quite a State or Stella reunion, but these guys always seemingly have issues, and they do love to banter (with one another or with others), so expect the snark to fly. The Internet allows me to tell you they had been casting about for people (and by people, I mean actors) to play the roles of an armed guard, and several characters with names. Aha! Michael, Ian Black edition, also told College Humor: "Hopefully that will be on the air sometime towards the end of this year or beginning of next. If not, you can probably find me working as a barista at a Starbucks near you." Whereas Showalter seems to have had a low-key summer, Ian Black has been seen cavorting on TVs this summer hosting Comedy Central’s Reality Bites Back spoof, on the Internet promoting his new book of essays, My Custom Van — this post for Best Week Ever explores his favorite such vans — and of course, in person promoting the...

Iliza Shlesinger wins Last Comic Standing 6!

That’s right. Iliza Shlesinger is your sixth winner of Last Comic Standing. Congrats, Iliza. You get a pile of cash, a development deal, and a new car, right? Wow. Here is a clip! Marcus finished runner-up. Did you have TV/DVR issues last night? If you were in the New York City and Cleveland areas, at least, then you most certainly did, because preseason NFL action pre-empted the finale of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, and some reports from the field say the show, if it aired at all last night, aired at 3 a.m.!? Other folks had TVs telling them LCS would air at 10 p.m., only to find America’s Got Talent on their recordings. Nice work, Peacock Network. Nice work. Anyhow, Shlesinger’s MySpace page already is newly tricked out to celebrate her victory. She becomes the first woman to win this stand-up competition. I’d say I’m surprised, but I’m not. As I noted earlier, NBC showcased Shlesinger more than the other finalists, and with her being the only one in the final five to get primetime airtime twice in elimination challenges, plus being the only female in a five-way call-in vote, she had a decided advantage in getting support. She also was the final finalist to perform last week, so viewers had her more on their brains when the voting lines opened. That’s not to detract from her victory....
