HBO sends Danny McBride back to school, orders up 18 episodes of “Vice Principals”

When Danny McBride first appeared on HBO’s Eastbound & Down, he was a down-and-out Major League Baseball pitcher returning back to his hometown as a gym teacher at his old middle school.

After four successful seasons and multiple comebacks, HBO welcomes back McBride and his creative partner Jody Hill for another romp in the school halls — this time, graduating to high school with 18 episodes of Vice Principals. It’s about exactly what you think it will be: High-school vice principals.

HBO announced the order (for two seasons, maybe more?) today. A debut date also is to be determined.

“Danny McBride and Jody Hill have created a smart, rowdy and unpredictable style of comedy that we can’t get enough of,” said Michael Lombardo, HBO Programming president. “The idea of them setting their minds on high school was irresistible.”

Said McBride: “HBO was the perfect creative family for ‘Eastbound & Down,’ and we’re excited to pack up the van for the next adventure.”

Vice Principals is executive produced by Danny McBride, Jody Hill, David Gordon Green and Stephanie Laing, who were also executive producers of “Eastbound & Down.”
