The UCBEast Theatre will close Feb. 9, 2019

The Beast took years longer than expected to open, but the Upright Citizen Brigade’s theater in the East Village will close with relatively short notice. Time’s up in a month, after shows on Saturday, Feb. 9.

UCB-NY Artistic Director Michael Hartney delivered the bad news via email late Wednesday.

The UCB East theatre closing is purely a cost-cutting measure. The theater also is laying off staff, including longtime tech guru Pat Baer, who had worked at the UCB Chelsea and UCBEast since April 2004.

Hartney also revealed that the UCB will make do in the short-term with a new partnership at 45 Bleecker St. called UCB Theatre at SubCulture, with shows booked there on the weekends (Friday-Sunday nights) starting Feb. 15, 2019. SubCulture also has sublet its space to the temporarily “homeless” comedy club, The Stand, while it’s renovating a new space in Union Square.
