Boston’s Improv Asylum has opened up in the former UCB Theater home in NYC

A year after the Upright Citizens Brigade left Chelsea to move their NYC theater up 16 blocks to Hells Kitchen, there’s improv and sketch comedy afoot underneath Gristedes once more.

Improv Asylum, based in Boston for 20 years, reopened the joint last weekend.

They’re currently offering shows only on Friday and Saturday nights from its NYC Mainstage cast, at $15 per ticket.

The Improv Asylum NYC cast consists of Trevor Livingston, Sarvenaz Ashley Emli, Vicki Hanes, Dana Shulman, Cavan Rogers and Christian Roberts. As with their Boston shows, Improv Asylum performs both improvised scenes and pre-written sketches over a 90-minute show with a brief intermission. Their improv tends more toward short-form Whose Line Is It Anyway? games rather than long-form Harolds or themes.

They’ve been doing the same in Boston’s North End since May 1998, with shows six nights a week in their original location.

Improv Asylum also is hiring in NYC! Currently seeking a house manager, ushers and box office agents. Future openings for bartenders and security. All positions are paid, part-time weekends and evenings. Applications accepted here.
