Tyler Perry will stop playing Madea after 2019 tour and movie

“I just don’t want to be her age, playing her,” Tyler Perry said of his famous alter-ego, Madea, who has starred in six major motion pictures, with a seventh on the way in 2019.

Perry broke the news earlier this week doing press for his latest movie, Nobody’s Fool, which stars Tiffany Haddish. And he reconfirmed it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

But Madea, Perry’s most popular character, has had him dressed up acting like a tough old lady for a long time now, and as he approaches 50, he’s inching closer to Madea’s age himself. From Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion in 2006 through Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween in 2017, the Madea movie franchise has earned more than $444 million at the box office.

Perry says Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral, out March 1, 2019, will mark Madea’s final screen turn, while he’ll also take the character out on the road for a farewell tour.
