West Virginia judge dismisses coal magnate’s lawsuit against HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

John Oliver has beat back a defamation lawsuit filed against him and his HBO show, Last Week Tonight, by Murray Energy Corporation coal magnate Robert Murray.

The judge in the case in West Virginia’s second judicial circuit, Jeffrey Cramer, wrote: “I find the arguments set forth in the Defendants’ Motion to Dismiss for Failure to State a Claim and Reply well-founded, appropriate in this matter and will grant the same. The Court adopts, with little exception, Defendants’ argument in support of their Motion regarding all issues addressed in the same.”

Or in simpler terms, the judge is granting HBO’s motion to dismiss the case.

As Oliver said on Sunday’s new episode of Last Week Tonight: “It’s not a time for gloating. It’s not a time for victory laps.” But that time will come, he vowed.
