CBS bringing back Murphy Brown for a new season in 2018

Thirty years after it debuted and 20 years after it went off the air, Murphy Brown is returning to CBS.

The Eye Network announced the revival Wednesday with a straight-back-to-series 13-episode order.

Named one of the “25 Greatest TV Characters of All Time” by TV Guide, and singled out by Vice President Dan Quayle in 1992 for showcasing single motherhood on network TV, Candice Bergen’s Murphy Brown starred as a TV news anchor and investigative journalist for 247 episodes from 1988-1998.

Bergen and original series creator Diane English are back on board.

No word on whether any of Bergen’s supporting cast also will return, although the media landscape is much different now than two decades ago.

Murphy Brown won 18 Emmy Awards (Bergen won five of them, plus a Golden Globe) during its original run.

It joins NBC’s Will and Grace, ABC’s Roseanne, and Netflix’s Fuller House as sitcoms from the 1990s making a full comeback during today’s Peak TV era.
