by Wyatt Cenac is joining John Oliver and Jon Stewart in making the jump to HBO.
HBO announced a new 10-episode late-night series starring Cenac that will debut in spring 2018. The untitled series stars Cenac, and will be executive produced by him alongside Oliver, Ezra Edelman and Hallie Haglund, who’ll be head writer. Diane Fitzgerald from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver also will co-executive produce.
The half-hour docu-series won’t have a desk; instead, Cenac will head out into the field to investigate and satirize current social and cultural issues.
“While my initial ask to play one of Molly’s love interests on Insecure was rejected, this is a nice consolation,” says Cenac. “My thanks to Nina, Casey Bloys and everyone at HBO for finally giving me a place where I can comfortably swear on television.”
“Wyatt is one of the smartest, funniest, most curious people I know,” noted Oliver. “I can’t wait to see what he comes up with.”
“We’re thrilled to give Wyatt this opportunity to showcase his bold take on today’s social issues,” said Nina Rosenstein, executive vice president, HBO Programming. “His ability to tackle tough topics with humor and insight makes this show a perfect addition to our late-night lineup.”
Cenac was a correspondent and writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart from 2008-2012, and earned a Grammy nomination in 2015 for his album, “Brooklyn.” You also can currently see him as star of the TBS series, People of Earth.
