HBO bringing back All Def Comedy for new season in December 2017

After a one-hour special last fall, HBO has announced All Def Comedy is coming back for six new episodes this December.

Tony Rock will host the series, as he did last year’s special. It’ll tape Oct. 10-11 at the Avalon Theatre in Los Angeles — performers yet to be announced, but HBO said they’ll include “stand-up performances in a variety of styles, spotlighting up-and-coming comics discovered at All Def Digital’s live weekly comedy showcase and special, and its online video platform to discover the best emerging comics, as well as “Def Comedy” veterans.”

It continues a relationship with executive producer Russell Simmons that goes back 25 years to the debut of Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam.

“I have witnessed firsthand how the most cutting-edge, seemingly alternative comics become the driving forces in mainstream comedy,” says Simmons. “I’m thankful to HBO for allowing me to give these new voices access to mainstream audiences everywhere.”

In its initial run from 1992 to 1997, Def Comedy Jam introduced the nation to the likes of Bernie Mac, Dave Chappelle, Chris Tucker, Martin Lawrence, Steve Harvey, and Cedric the Entertainer. When it returned in 2006, folks like Kevin Hart, Katt Williams and JB Smoove got wider audiences.

Simmons executive produces All Def Comedy with Stan Lathan, Chris Conti and Jeru Tillman, with Lathan directing. It’ll be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, and HBO On Demand.
