Jon Stewart tells Tom Brokaw that social media has “democratized abuse”

In a conversation celebrating Tom Brokaw’s 50-year career with NBC News, Jon Stewart told the veteran newscaster that social media has “democratized abuse.”

More specifically, here’s the exchange:

JON STEWART: Social media, I think, has democratized abuse. As well as, brought community. You’ve seen so many technological advances, has there ever been one that was only used for good?

TOM BROKAW: No.

JON STEWART: And it’s inherent in – it animates negative things – but it also – I wouldn’t give it up. Because it also connects people in a way that’s remarkable.

We’ve come a long way from getting our information from the daily newspaper and three TV stations.

Brokaw also talks with David Letterman, Lorne Michaels, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Tom Hanks, Colin Powell, Sheryl Sandberg, Jim Webb, Wes Moore and Thomas Friedman in a two-hour Dateline NBC special, Tom Brokaw: The First 50 Years, which will air Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017.
