Netflix nabs Seinfeld for new stand-up special plus new seasons of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Netflix has new stand-up specials already this month from Jen Kirkman, Jim Gaffigan, Neal Brennan, Cristela Alonzo and Bill Burr, with specials forthcoming in 2017 from Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and Louis C.K., who taped his over the weekend in D.C.

So why not Jerry Seinfeld, too!?!

Netflix announced a deal late today that not includes two new stand-up specials from Seinfeld, but also poached his award-winning webseries away from Crackle. While the ninth season of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is putting out new episodes this month on Crackle, Seinfeld’s 24-episode 10th season later in 2017 will go exclusively Netflix along with all of the previous episodes.

“Jerry is known the world over as both a great TV innovator and beloved comic voice,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said Tuesday in a statement. “We are incredibly proud to welcome him to the Netflix comedy family.”

And from Seinfeld:

“When I first started thinking about Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, the entire Netflix business model consisted of mailing out DVDs in envelopes. I love that we are now joining together, both at very different points. I am also very excited to be working with Ted Sarandos at Netflix, a guy and a place that not only have the same enthusiasm for the art of stand-up comedy as I do, but the most amazing technology platform to deliver it in a way that has never existed before. I am really quite charged up to be moving there.”

Seinfeld’s Netflix deal not only includes a new stand-up special coming out in 2017, but also his next special after that, plus Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, PLUS a development deal that’ll have him working on both scripted and non-scripted new programming for the streaming giant.
